CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University head baseball coach
Rodney Batts announced the addition of David Steed to the coaching staff on Friday, Aug. 15. Steed, who comes to Delta State from the University of West Alabama, will serve as the hitting and catchers' coach. He replaces Slater Lott, who recently resigned to pursue other coaching opportunities.
"We're excited to add someone with coach Steed's knowledge and background joining our staff," Batts said. "David is a highly respected coach, recruiter and developer of talent. He will be an excellent addition to the program."
Steed, a native of Starkville, spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant coach for Gary Rundles and the Tigers in Livingston. His responsibilities included working with hitters, recruiting, and weight training.
During his time with UWA, the Tigers captured the 2015 Gulf South Conference championship and made four trips to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. UWA had four Tigers selected in the Major League Baseball Draft including Gandy Stubblefield (Phillies/2015), Tanner Rainey (Reds/2015), J.T. Salter (Mariners/2018) and Steffon Moore (Rays/2018).
He has coached 13 Tiger All-GSC hitters, one All-American, two GSC Freshmen of the Year, a GSC Player of the Year and 13 All-South Region players. In 2008, the Tigers set a new GSC record by having 12 players on the All-GSC team.
Prior to his stint at West Alabama, Steed worked at Arkansas Tech University, where he was responsible for working with the hitters during his five years with the Wonder Boys. He coached five All-Region and 13 All-GSC hitters.
Before becoming a coach in the collegiate ranks, he played two years at Meridian Community College, where he was named an NJCAA All-American, NJCAA All-Region and earning team MVP honors. He was also part of the first MCC team to make an appearance in the NJCAA College World Series, where he was named to the World Series All-Tournament Team.
He left MCC after being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 15th round. During his nine-year professional career, he played in the Dodgers, Angels and Rangers organizations, including four seasons at the AAA level.
Steed is married to the former Lynda Hill of North Little Rock, Ark., and they have one daughter (Cameron).
