MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Clare Pinter's time of 20:43 in her debut for the Lady Statesmen helped propel the Delta State University Women's Cross Country team to a 13
th place finish in the Montevallo Falcons Invitational 5K on Saturday, Sept. 7. Samford University claimed the team title followed by the University of Alabama, Mississippi College, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the University of Montevallo in the top five.
"Proud of our effort today on a hilly and humid Montevallo course," head coach
Doug Pinkerton said. "We take today's results and learn from them, but it was nice to see our ladies compete today."
Clare Pinter, a freshman from Pearl, was the top finisher for the Lady Statesmen in her first career race, taking 35th overall against runners from all NCAA divisions. Her time of 20:43 was 16
th among NCAA. Division II competitors.
"Clare made some great strides today and really showed what she is capable of as she develops as a collegiate competitor," Pinkerton added. "Today's event was good for all our newcomers because they got to compete against runners from all levels of NCAA cross country."
Abby Thomas, a sophomore from Wesson, and
Sydney Roberts, a junior from Ingomar, were the next two Lady Statesmen to finish, as Thomas hit the line in 23:00 (81
st) followed by Roberts 23:29 (85
th).
Jamie Claire Musselwhite, a sophomore from Hernando, turned in a 25:39 (105
th) while
Cassidy Fitch, a sophomore from Hernando, and
Savannah Hudgins, a freshman from Saltillo, rounded out the times for the Lady Statesmen with a 27:55 (118
th) and 30:00 (125
th) respectively.
The Lady Statesmen return to competition next Saturday, Sept. 14 at one of the largest races in the southeast, the All-State Insurance Sugar Bowl Festival (5K) in New Orleans. Loyola University will host the event. Teams from all levels of collegiate cross country and professional runners from across the globe will be competing in the "Big Easy."
"We've got as major test ahead of us next week, but I know the team is excited about the opportunity to get back out there and compete," Pinkerton concluded.
