MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated the Falcons from the University of Montevallo 177-78 Saturday afternoon in the SAC Natatorium in Montevallo.
The Statesmen had several great performances led by three individual first place finishes from sophomore
Riley Oakes.
Oakes was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that kicked off the meet with a time of 1:36.07. The 200-yarde medley team included Oakes,
Ethan Baylin,
Simon Pereira, and
Michael Robinson.
Freshman
Adam Rickert would continue the momentum for the green and white as he would take first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:13.82.
In the third event, sophomore
Lars Hetzel would take first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:30.75 time. In the 200-yard freestyle, the Statesmen took the top four spots as
Mateus Franco,
Austin Huffhines, and Pereira would follow Hetzel.
Oakes would continue his hot streak in the pool as he would win the 100-yard backstroke with a 53.41 timed heat.
Ethan Baylin and
Eudald Tosquella would take the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke as Baylin would take first place with a 59.75 second race.
Freshman
Kacper Mochnal joined the group of Statesmen first place finishers as he took the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:54.69 time.
Following the 200-yard butterfly, Robinson would get his individual first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.72 second finish.
The Statesmen didn't get a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle but still scored a lot of points as Huffhines, Jake Runyon and
Ian McCorkle took second, third and fourth place. Huffhines led the trio with a time of 48.01 seconds.
Oakes would get his final first place finish of the afternoon in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.66.
Tosquella would join the first-place finish club in the 200-yard breaststroke with 2:18.65 race.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Statesmen foursome of Robinson, Brooks Butler,
Jakob Brougham and Baylin would take second through fifth place to keep Delta State's lead at a wide margin.
Following the 500-yard freestyle, the trio of Pereira, Franco, and Mochnal took second through fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Pereira led the way with a 53.40 second race.
Oakes would take his third individual race in the 200-yard medley as he would edge fellow Statesmen Mochnal with a time of 1:59.30.
To finish the afternoon, the Delta State 200-yard freestyle relay team of Baylin, Huffhines, Runyon and Robinson finished the meet winning the race with a 1:25.95 time.
The Statesmen will be back in the pool on Friday, Jan. 24, as they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on the Tigers from Louisiana State University. That meet will kick off at 10:00 a.m. (CDT).
