Lady Statesmen Swimming & Diving falls by one point to UNO 119-118

Final Results

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams sent a message to the rest of NCAA DII Saturday at the University of New Orleans, despite dropping a dual meet to the Privateers.  The NCAA Division I Privateers edged the Lady Statesmen 119-118.  The dual meet was the final regular season meet for DSU before the postseason begins with the NSISC Championships in February.

"Our team competed at such a high level today, but it just didn't turn out the way we wanted it to in the end," said coach Brian Hein.  "I think we're ready to begin the postseason and I know the team is focused on our goal of bringing the NSISC title back to Cleveland and making a run at the NCAA title."

In the women's meet, competition was stiffer than any other meet this season.  In the first race of the day, the Lady Statesmen, led by Alyce Meador, Samantha Fajardo, Amanda Guidry, and Mary Katherine Waddell, exploded out of the gate for the win in the 400-Medley Relay.  Their time of 4:02.67 was almost full two seconds faster than UNO.

In the women's 50-Free, newcomer Samantha Fajardo narrowly missed the upset by .02 seconds, 24.87 to 24.89, behind UNO's Catalina Mendieta.

Amanda Guidry (2:07.64) also claimed first place in the 200-Butterfly for the Lady Statesmen.

The Lady Statesmen 400-Free relay team of Elena English, Hannah Willis, Kaci Bolls, and Dawn Thomson won the event by almost six seconds over UNO with a 3:45.61.

In women's diving, the Lady Statesmen trio of Jennifer Gerasimos (194.85), Jaclyn Gerasimos (160.05), and Hannah Mantooth (131.40) took second through fourth places in 1-Meter Diving.  The Gerasimos sisters also took second and third in 3-Meter Diving.

The Lady Statesmen will return to the pool February 11-15 in Cleveland for the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships.  The four day event will be held at the DSU Aquatics Center.
