CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams extended their season-opening win streak to two dual meets, crushing Centenary College Saturday. Nov. 7 at the DSU Aquatics Center in dual meet action. The Lady Statesmen swam past the Lady Gents 170-92, while the Statesmen claimed a 165-97 win over the Gents.
“It was a great day for us in the pool,” stated coach Brian Hein. “We held our biannual reunion in this weekend and a lot of our former student-athletes had a chance to see the team at its best.”
The Lady Statesmen, led by
Hannah Willis,
Sam Fajardo,
Amanda Guidry and
Mary Katherine Waddell, began the sweep with a commanding win in the 400-Medley Relay with a 4:00.39.
The relays really set the tone for the day, as DSU won 12-of-14 events on the afternoon.
Sophomore All-American
Mary Katherine Waddell continued the streak with a near-two second victory in the 200-Free, posting a 1:58.48.
In the 100-Backstroke, senior All-Americans
Alyce Meador and
Hannah Willis raced to the finish, as Meador edged Willis for the victory 1:00.39 to 1:01.65.
Amanda Guidry, a senior All-American from Cut Off, La., turned in an NCAA D2B cut time in the 200-Butterfly with a 2:09.59. Guidry also took top prize in the 100-Butterfly with a 58.57, also a D2B cut.
Sam Fajardo also recorded a D2B cut in the 50-Free with a 24.14, edging freshman
Victoria Culliver for the win with a 25.88.
In one of the best races of the day, Fajardo out-touched Waddell in the 100-Free by .14, 54.37 to 54.51, to claim the win.
Also claiming victories for the Lady Statesmen were
Hannah Willis (200-Back/2:10.58),
Hannah Boudreaux (200-Breaststroke/2:29.36 and 400-Individual Medley/4:43.06). The Lady Statesmen also claimed the victory in the 400-Free Relay with a blistering 3:40.89.
The Statesmen also delivered big for coach Brian Hein. The Statesmen also jump started the day for the green-and-white with a 3:31.13 to claim the 400-Medley Relay.
Like the ladies, the men took nearly every event, winning 13-of-14.
All-American
Wolfgang Mairinger claimed three wins on the day with victories in the 1000-Free (9:50.43), 500-Free (4:48.88) and 400-Individual Medley (4:14.24).
All-American
Cameron Weidele took first place in the 200-Free, touching the pads in 1:44.81. Freshman
Adam Dajka earned the win in the 100-Back (53.40) and 200-Back with a D2B cut 1:53.18.
Waldemar Juschin blazed the competition in the 100-Breaststroke in just 59.38 for the win, while Alex Lorenz (200-Butterfly/1:56.61 and 100-Butterfly/51.95) turned in another amazing performance for DSU with two wins on the day.
Stephen Ingvoldstad continued his quick start, winning the 50-Free (21.45).
DSU returns to the pool on Nov. 14 at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
