ARKADELPHIA, ARK. - The Lady Statesmen tennis team won two-of-three matches last week to advance their season record to 3-2. The first two matches were played Feb. 20-21 in Arkadelphia, Ark., while the third match was played against Alabama-Huntsville in Memphis, Tenn.
Things did not go as planned in match one of the weekend slate as DSU only claimed one set in a 9-0 loss to Northeastern State.
Cecile Benzaki took the first set, 7-6 over Ceihon of Northeastern State, but dropped the next two.
The Lady Statesmen turned things around in the second and third matches of their three matches in four days stretch as claimed their first victory of the season, 7-2 over Drury. In singles play, DSU won five-of-six matches to help get the win.
Katarinna Nett booked a win in the number one singles spot, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 over Katia Bon of Drury. Reigning GSC West Player of the Year
Cecile Benzaki also picked up a win in singles play, as did newcomer
Lisa Jamais.
Krystle Ozols and
Tatiana Bouchaud picked up wins in the fifth and sixth spots singles spots as well for DSU.
The teams of Nett/Ozols, and Benzaki/Bouchaud picked up doubles wins for the Lady Statesmen to finish out the match.
DSU would make quick work of UAH on Feb. 23 in Memphis, as they cruised to a 9-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville. Benzaki,
Milena Araujo, Ozols,
Priscilla Duarte, and
Amanda Corneilison all picked up singles wins, blanking UAH. DSU dropped only eight total games in the five matches.
The team of Benzaki/Bouchaud along with Araujo/Jamais booked easy doubles wins to close the match for DSU.
The Lady Statesmen will return to the court on Feb. 28, to take on Christian Brothers in Cleveland. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
