CLEVELAND, Miss. – On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Delta State University swimming and diving teams begin competition at the NSISC Championships. The four-day event will be held at the DSU Aquatics Center on the campus of Delta State.
In 2018, Lindenwood claimed the women's competition with 1082.5 total points. The Lady Statesmen finished in third last season behind Lindenwood and West Florida. On the men's side Delta State claimed their 10th New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference championship in program history with 1024.5 points.
Six women's and five men's teams are set to compete in this seasons NSISC Championships. Besides the Lady Statesmen and Statesmen, it will be Henderson State, Lindenwood, Ouachita Baptist, the University of Texas at Permian Basin, and West Florida will bring a women's team.
It will be a high stakes matchup on the men's side as two of the teams are currently ranked in the top five. There are a total of three of the men's teams currently ranked in the top 25. The Statesmen enter the meet ranked No. 3 by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. Lindenwood is at number five in the country and Henderson State is number 22.
On the women's side, three of the teams are in the top 15. The Lady Statesmen are number 11 in the same CSCAA poll with West Florida at number 12. In the top ten is Lindenwood, who comes to the meet at number six.
The Statesmen have won the last three of the last four meets. They won their second straight DSU Christmas Invitational and then defeated Henderson State and Emory in January. The Lady Statesmen have won the last two meets against Henderson State and Emory and West Florida in January as well.
The Statesmen have several of the top times in the conference so far.
Giulio Brugnoni has the top times in the 50 free, 100 fly, and the 100 back.
Mattia Schirru has the best times in the 100 and 200 free.
For the Lady Statesmen,
Lucia Martelli has the fastest time so far in the 100 back and the 100 fly.
Madison Lavoie leads the conference in the 100 breast and 200 IM while
