CLEVELAND, Miss. –No. 10/1 Delta State University baseball (13-1, 6-0 GSC) team's rally from a 6-1 deficit came up short in a 6-4 loss to Arkansas Tech (10-7, 5-1 GSC) at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field on Wednesday.
The Statesmen trailed 6-1 before scoring three runs in the eighth to cut the ATU lead to 6-4. DSU had the tying runs in scoring position in the eighth when a ground out ended the inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arkansas Tech scored two runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Korey Thompson was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch and Tristan Thomas had an RBI single.
- The Statesmen cut the deficit in half in the third. Payton Lane singled and scored on a David Herrington double down the right field line.
- The Wonder Boys took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Evan Hafley walked and scored a Thompson sac fly.
- Delta State look to cut into the ATU lead in the fourth. Jake Barlow tripled with one out and Hayden White drew a walk before a double play ended the inning.
- Harry Gard, Matt Robbins and Britt Stroth had RBI singles in the sixth as ATU scored three unearned runs to take a 6-1 lead.
- Delta State scored three runs and the tying runs in scoring position in the eighth. Josh Russell singled and pinch hitter CJ Estave reached on a fielder's choice to start the rally. Brett Young singled to score Russell and Estave scored when Herrington reached on a fielder's choice. Young would score on the next play when Darek Sargent reached on a fielder's choice.
- Sargent moved to third when Barlow reached on a fielder's choice and Barlow advanced to second on a wild pitch before a ground out ended the Statesmen threat in the eighth.
- Luke Ketchum drew a two-out walk in the ninth only to see a fly out end the game.
ON THE MOUND
- Drake Norton (1-1) pitched eight innings, giving up four runs on six this with two strikeouts and four walks as ATU's winning pitcher.
- DSU starter Christian Day (1-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings pitched.
- Tyler Walton tossed 1.2 scoreless innings while Layne Tedder and Tommy Childree each worked a scoreless.
NOTEABLES
- Young went 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI as the only Statesmen with two hits.
- Jake Barlow's one-out triple in the fourth was his GSC leading fourth of the season.
- Lane, Russell and Herrington had one hit apiece for the Statesmen.
- The Statesmen are now 7-1 against the Great American Conference this season.
