CLEVELAND, Miss. – Zack Shannon lifted a 1-2 change-up high over the left field wall, and #20 Delta State University walked off with a 10-8 win over Union University in game one of a doubleheader at Ferriss Field. Union University bounced back in game two, however, pounding out 13 hits en route to a 10-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM1)
- Union got a pair of hits in the top of the first inning and Delta State added three of their own, but neither team managed to muster a run.
- The five combined hits in the first did, however, foreshadow a big offensive day for both sides, as Union pushed across five runs in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs only mustered one hit, but drew five walks and used a throwing error by Josh Russell to push across two runs as they lead it 5-0.
- Delta State got one back on Jason Popovich's single to left field that scored Justin Nussbaum to make it 5-1.
- The Bulldogs added another in the top of the third, but the Statesmen cut into the lead as a Russell sacrifice fly and a Nick Morgan single drove in a pair for the home team to make it 6-3.
- The good guys broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a Zack Shannon stroked a two-run triple to score Popovich, who had reached on an error, and Brian Lane, who had walked, to make it 8-5. David Pimentel followed suite with an RBI single to center.
- Three batters later, Nussbaum lined a single through the left side to score Russell and Pimentel as the Statesmen tied the game 8-8.
- Both pitching staffs tightened up in innings five through nine, combining to allow just one hit.
- After getting nothing in the bottom of the ninth, the Statesmen got a two-out single from Lane to keep the inning alive. Zack Shannon saw three pitches from Austin Kitterman before taking the 1-2 offering deep over the left field wall as DSU got it's first walk-off win of the season, 10-8.
ON THE MOUND (GM1)
- Delta State starter Corey Beard lasted just 1.2 inning, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits. Beard walked four batters and threw 39 pitches.
- Peyton White came out of the bullpen and went 5.1 innings in middle relief. White gave up a trio of runs, scattered a pair of walks and struck out four Bulldog batters.
- Zach Osbon (3-0) got the win as the second pitcher out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings. Osbon allowed one hit and struck-out four of the 10 batters he faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM2)
- Union tallied a pair of runs in the top of the first, as Tyler Mauzy scored on a Nolen Milton triple, and Zach Wylie doubled down the line to score Milton.
- The Bulldogs' 2-0 lead held until the bottom of the third, when Zack Shannon drove in Popovich to make it 2-1.
- In the top of the fifth inning Union put up five runs on Hobbs, including a grand slam from Dylan Moore, to make it 7-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
- The Statesmen tacked on a run in the bottom half of the inning as Nussbaum scored on a ground ball double play to make it 7-2.
- Union added three runs on a Zach Phillips bases clearing double to run the score to 10-2.
- Delta State's Jamell Newson led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk, and came around to score when Cody Young grounded into a double play.
- Emil Ellis, who had singled one batter before Young, came around to score on a Popovich RBI single to pull the score to 10-4.
- That was as close as the Statesmen would get, as Union held off the Statesmen in the night cap.
ON THE MOUND (GM2)
- Tre Hobbs got the start for game two, and struggled against the Union lineup. Hobbs allowed 12 hits and 10 runs (five earned) while striking out eight batters and walking a pair of Union hitters.
- Bryant Johnston came on in relief and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings. Johnston struck out three batters.
NOTABLES:
- The Delta State pitching staff has now registered eight or more strikeouts in 13 of their first 15 games.
- The Statesmen notched their first walk-off victory in game one over Union.
- Shannon tied a team-high with his third home run of the season in game one.
- DSU now has scored 46 of 91 runs with two outs this season.
- Shannon went 4-for-6 with four runs driven in and two runs scored in game one, and is hitting .414 through DSU's first 15 games.
- Popovich was 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a double, a walk and a run driven in.
