ITTA BENA, Miss.—Darek Sargent,
Jake Barlow,
Payton Lane and
Josh Russell combined for nine RBIs to lead No. 13 Delta State University baseball team (32-10, 18-8 GSC) to a 12-6 win over Mississippi Valley State (6-22) on Tuesday, April 23 at the MVSU Baseball Field.
Barlow went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Statesmen at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Jake Barlow solo home run in the first.
- MVSU's Jordan Sawyer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first tied the game 1-1.
- Delta State scored two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Payton Lane and Weber Herbison scored on a Josh Russell single down the left field line in the second. Barlow singled and scored on a Lane single in the third.
- The lead grew to 7-1 in the fourth. Barlow had a sac-fly to center to score Russell and Brett Young scored when David Herrington walked a stole second. Herrington later scored on a CJ Estave RBI single.
- Mississippi Valley State cut the lead to 7-5 with a four-run fourth. Billy LeFlore doubled in a run and Wendell Rieves had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
- The Statesmen added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-5 lead. After a run scored on an error, Russell scored on a Darek Sargent sac-fly to center in the fifth. Estave doubled and scored on a Lane sac-fly to center.
- Sargent doubled home two runs to extend the lead to 12-5 in the ninth.
- Fred Spencer's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth closed the scoring and cut the Statesmen lead to 12-6.
ON THE MOUND
- Statesmen starter Dalton Minton (8-2) gave up a run on two hits in two schedule innings pitched to pick up the win.
- MVSU starter Nicholas Johnson (2-3) yielded three runs on four hits with a walk to suffer the loss.
- Layne Tedder, Patrick Hodges, Tyler Walton to work four innings, allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts to close the game.
NOTEABLES
- Barlow was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and Sargent went 2-for-5 with a double, a sac-fly and three RBIs
- Russell had two hits including a two-run double while Lane had two singles with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Estave went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
- Head Coach Mike Kinnison earned win number 971 putting him 29 wins shy of 1,000.
