Haynes, a Columbus native, closed his career at Delta State University as one of the all-time great baseball players in NCAA Division II history from 1998-2000 for coach Mike Kinnison. The former slugger finished his time at DSU ranking No. 1 in nine career and seasonal records. Haynes, the 2000 American Baseball Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Year, holds school records for career batting average (.405), home runs (69), total bases (537), and RBIs (253).

He also holds the season record for average (.444), RBIs (92), home runs (26), total bases (197), doubles (Tied for second-25) and runs scored (88). The power-hitting outfielder also connected on four home runs in four at-bats versus Southern Arkansas in the GSC Tournament. He also helped the Statesmen claim the 2000 GSC championship with his work at the plate and his 69 home runs rank second all-time in NCAA Division II history.

One of the most decorated players in DSU and Gulf South Conference history, Haynes was a three-time ABCA All-American, All-GSC and All-South Central Region selection. A 14th round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, Haynes played eight seasons of Minor League Baseball for the organization, including three at AAA Memphis.
