A two-time All-Gulf South Conference selection at second base for the Statesmen Baseball team, Batts helped direct the green-and-white to the 1996 league championship after smashing a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  The New Hope, Miss., native transferred to DSU from East Mississippi Community College compiling a .344 batting average with 10 home runs, 86 RBIs and 39 stolen bases in his two-year career.  Batts was also an All-Region selection in 1996 and ranks eigth in school history for triples in a season with six.  His 27 stolen bases in 1996 are also fifth all-time for the Statesmen in a season.

The former second baseman's contributions to the program have continued as an assistant coach for Mike Kinnison for 13 years.  In 2004, Batts helped lead the Statesmen to the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship with a 12-8 victory over Grand Valley State.
